Tuesdays with Nate | Goals
In light of the return of the NFL season this week, I was going to call my weekly post “Testosterone Tuesday” and tell you all about my fantasy football teams, share my ultimate nacho recipe, review “Madden NFL 2010″ for iPhone (amazing by the way), maybe talk about the new iPod Nano with video cameras, and on and on and on. Obviously it would have been absolutely riveting, but not groundbreaking. Then of course, I could have droned on about our new Canon 5dMkII and our new lens, or tried to elaborate how excited I was about the 7D we just ordered. Again, I’m planning on making a very technical post soon, comparing cameras, lenses, lighting techniques and more. So I was left very uninspired, until I realized that we forgot to tell you all about something big. SOMETHING VERY BIG.

As Becka and I first stumbled down the road of photography, we set some goals, both long term and short term, some lofty and some all too attainable. One of them was to have our work published in a magazine. As you might remember, that goal was achieved last year when one of our photos was published in the Photo District News “Top Knots” contest as a finalist, which led to us being published in Professional Photographer Magazine (April, 2008) when they used some of our images in a small article on “Trash the Prom Dress”. We must have made a good impression, because last month Professional Photographer Magazine not only featured us again, but used our shot on the cover, ran a 7 page article on the success of our business (written by Jeff Kent who is an amazing writer and so awesome to work with!), and inserted an article written by Becka and I about using facebook to promote your business! (You can read it all here: Studio222 Photography in Professional Photographer Magazine) So I guess we were published twice over: our images, and our writing. Having an image on the cover of a magazine is something we never even imagined could happen to us so you can only assume the amount of victory dances Becka was doing throughout the house. Needless to say, we were both very excited.

And while we felt like this was something that deserved being talked about on our beloved blog, my segment however, is not called “Toot your own Horn Tuesdays”, and I wouldn’t want to rob you of some fun insights into my life (since that’s what Tuesday’s with Nate is all about). So I wanted to share a couple of goals I’ve set for myself, one long term and one short term.
Short Term:
I think I’m one of the funniest people you know. I truly believe it. I may be delusional, but the only way for me to find out is to try my hand at stand up comedy. Before the year is over, I WILL have tried to make people laugh at an open mic night. I’ve never really shared that goal with anyone but my closest friends, it’s something I’ve always thought but never been confident enough to actually act on, and it may very well end in humiliation, but at least then I’ll know if i am terrible.
Long Term:
Ask me what I’m dong tomorrow, I’ll mumble back “eh, I dunno”. Ask me what I’m doing in a week and I’ll probably laugh out loud. If it weren’t for Becka, I wouldn’t have any sort of organization in my life other than “shower, work, eat dinner, repeat”, so asking for long term goals is like asking Kanye West to think before he speaks. That being said, I would love win a VMA.
In all seriousness, the most exciting thing in the world to me would be to get back in the studio as a drummer. It’s been far too long since I’ve considered myself a serious musician, and recording an album was one of the most exciting and rewarding things I’ve ever done. Getting my drums set up, getting to practice, and get back in the studio would be as exciting as anything I could imagine. So there it is, my short and long term personal goals.
I leave you with two questions. Take some time to give some thought to them, and then leave a comment and let me know what you find out about yourself…
1) What have you always wanted to do that you’ve been too embarrassed or afraid of failure to tell anyone about? (ex. freestyle rap battle, civil war reenacting, play water polo)
2) What passion have you let go of in your life that you would love to get back, and what’s stopping you from pursuing it?

Congrats on getting published (again)!!! Loved the article. I am so excited you guys will be shooting my wedding… in 45 days! Woot!
To answer the questions…
1) I always wanted to learn how to dance but I have no rhythym and am terrible at it… so I don’t want to try out of feeling embarrassed when I dance! LOL
2.) I miss playing volleyball regularly. I joined a league here in Tampa but, long story short, the people who ran it were not people I wanted to be around, so I had to quit. I haven’t found anything to take its place yet!
Congratulations to you! I just read your feature in PPM, and came right here to check out your blog. Awesome stuff!
DUDE. 1) i have ALWAYS wanted to do stand up comedy. it has been a secret dream of mine as well. so let me know when you do this, i simply must attend. 2) i miss art. i miss being an artist. in high school, being able to create is what got me through the day. i tok every art class that was available. however, when i became an ‘art director’ in 2005, i went from creating art to just doing and/or arranging it. it was mechanical, at best. i would like to incorporate it into what i am doing now in chicago, but i still feel so burnt out.
First- Love the post, 2nd Amanda, I dont know what area you live in but there is a indoor soccer center in Longwood. Northside Soccer Complex. Its owned and run by a friend of my husbands. My husband also plays there. If you would like more info on it email me personally. :) TaraEllisHiler01@yahoo.com
ok now back to Nate: I have to say that I really enjoy looking at and reading this blog, you both are such interesting people and, in my opinion, gifted writers. I look forward to checking the blog!
Fantastic feature :)
Great Post Nate!
1.)Actually, this may sound silly…and well darnit, it is but I always said I want to be a professional Tuber (as in on the back of the boat, on a single tube) flailing and holding on for dear life…I used to do it a lot and I think I got pretty good. My friends dad would take me around whipping me as fast and hard as he could across the water, 90 degree turns, everything he could think of. And my inspiration for holding on was that hitting the water that hard hurt more than you know…..it would be amazing to get that into the X games and do it!
2.) I played soccer for about 14 years and stopped when I left for college in 2004….I absolutely loved playing indoor…even with asthma, I didn’t care. I did backflips after I scored, it was a rush like none other and every time I think about playing, I get teary eyed (like right now) because i would give anything to play again, but it seems there is a lack of indoor in florida….or maybe I am not looking hard enough, I’m not sure. I sure miss it…
1) Nothing, to my memory. I have never been embarrassed about doing what I want to do. I’m a gung ho person, and I don’t spend much time being embarrassed.
2) I miss writing fiction/poetry/prose. I used to write all the time when I was younger.. and I still write now but only in journaling form. I miss writing just fanciful thoughts from my head.. I need to get back to it.
