On gender parties, and me being ridiculous…

by Becka on October 18th, 2009

This week I was introduced to something that has me so excited that I can’t even stand it. Have you heard of the Duggar grand baby yet? The Duggar’s just had their first grand baby and it’s making national headlines. Josh and Anna just brought their first child into the world but the thing that I think is soooo fantastic is the way they found out the sex of their baby. It was with something called a gender cake. (Stay with me here…) Basically it’s this new trend where you have the ultrasound tech write down the sex of the baby and seal it in an envelope. Then you plan a big party with your family and friends to find out the sex of the baby all at once. The best part about the whole thing is that you take the sealed envelope to your favorite bakery and have them bake a cake that is either pink or blue depending on what’s in you belly. They then ice and decorate it in a way that is gender neutral so you have no idea until you actually cut into it in front of all your family. HOW EFFING CUTE IS THAT? I can’t even stand it. I’m not even pregnant and the idea of this makes me completely giddy with excitement. (Partly because I really like cake. And partly because I really like surprises.) I’m pretty certain that I want to do this one day. And hey, if you happen to be pregnant at your wedding maybe you can incorporate the idea. How crazy would that be? And if you do that, please call me because I want to photograph it! I digress…

I did a search on YouTube for these parties and found this ridiculously adorable video from some cute couple who did this. The couple is absolutely drop dead ADORABLE and I literally get choked up watching them find out that they’re having a ______ (You’ll have to watch for yourself. I’m not gonna spoil the fun!). Their reaction is priceless! Seriously, it will make you feel all warm and fuzzy and way more excited than you need to be for complete strangers. (I was literally on the verge of clapping along with the video the first time I watched it. Yes, I’m kind ridiculous.) I bounded into the office and asked Nate if we could do this and he said yes and I’m way more excited than I need to be about it since I’m not actually pregnant or even close to being pregnant but still… enjoy…

What do you think about this new trend? How do you want to find out and share the sex of your baby (or future baby)?

Two of my friends did this, but rather than use a cake, they went to Nordstroms & picked out a boy outfit and a girl outfit. They gave the cashier money & the sealed envelope from the doctor, and came back a few minutes later to pick up the package. It was fun to have the family & close friends there when they opened the Nordstroms box and discovered … it’s a boy! ;)
