Evolution of a (St. Augustine) Engagement Session
The evolution of an engagement session.
One confirmation email. One tank full of gas. Clean off 4 cards. Double the images on 2 separate drives. Double check. Triple check. Call Nate into the room for one last check. Delete. A clean canvas. Just like my makeup-less face. Pockets full of clean canvases in the form of gigabytes. A clean canvas face as well. We’ve got to go. No time for makeup. The wind would blow it all off anyway. And half my face will be hidden behind a black box.
An audio book to pass the time. He doesn’t really want to listen to this one, but the last book was his choice, and I lecture him about compromise. Vampire book for the win. Nephews say the title sounds boring. Someone goes missing early on. He admits that it’s actually interesting. Mile markers. A fast food detour. Too much milkshake for anyone’s good. Asphalt fly by. Rainclouds. A watercolored sky. Text to the waiting couple: It’s up to you, but we’ll be fine without the bikes. Ideas begin to flow.
Charm – Love – Soft – Anthropologie – Tender strength – Back roads.
Definitely back roads.
Two smiling faces through the car window. Glance to the right. Let’s walk in that direction, and see what we find. We all love this town. A gate. A bunch of ivy. A brick road. Finding things like wild lettuce and wild rosemary. A house for sale. Nate said no. A natural relaxation. No real need to pose, though I’ve got ideas. Laughter. A single flower. A fort with withered grass. Lots of laughter. Wind like a force all its own. Two men with arms like towers to hold us steady. Hair in my face. Nate with a vintage viewfinder. Two new friends. A bit of hot sauce (but that’s a post for another day). This is going to be good, I can feel it…

These photos are really remarkable. You capture the couple, the place and yourselves. Wonderful.
This session is one of my favorites! I love the one with her head on his knee. So adorable! Way to rock it!
These photos are stunning!
I’m friends with Sonja and I just have to say that this pics are sooo amazing! I especially love the ones with the flowers and the yellow car (to go with the yellow in her dress). They look like they are having such a great time and like they are sooo in love! =)
Beautiful! I love the ivy wall ;)
LOVE this session! I always love seeing St. Augustine in a new light. Although we have shot in many of those exact locations your session is incredibly different than ours. Lovely lovely lovely. :)
I really like these images…. Great job baby….
I love how casual and relaxed this couple looks. The four of you must have had a ton of fun on this shoot. GREAT photos!
Wow! That fort makes such an amazing background!
@Khristen It’s the fort in St. Augustine. I don’t know if it has any other name. :)
I don’t know what’s better, your words or your photos, I love both. :)
Beautiful post. I love when we get shoot details! Very entertaining! Ok so I’m stumped, is this fort matanzas? I don’t recall there being so many walls… You gotta give me a clue LOL
Ok. First of all- I must say- I am h o o k e d! (My friend, Andie Freeman, turned me on to you.)
It’s like your blog is a new episode of “Friends” (I’m guessing you guys are Monica and Chandler??) I just can’t stop reading, searching, viewing. Bravo, B n N. Bravo. Thanks for the inspiration… it was well needed. Thanks, also, for being so open with your success, ideas and feedback. Your story is pretty incredible. And your photos? Well, it goes without sayin’. All you have to do is look at them. Which is the point. Right?
Can’t wait to read/watch more of your journey…
@Andrea Thank you. I’m going to be trying to take more time for my writing again here on this blog so hopefully everyone will like it. :) And seriously… you seem to know all of our couples. I think we were destined to somehow connect in this life. :)
Such lovely photos, such a lovely voice. I miss reading your old blog Miss Becka! And, another couple that I know (what a crazy world…). Binh and I were in school together at UF. Many congrats to the happy, beautiful couple!
