Wildflowers | Alexandra & Jon Day After Session

Mar 31 at 2:22 pm

Orlando, Florida

Maybe it’s their name, wildflowers. Maybe it’s the way they are almost always unexpected. Maybe it’s the mystery: how did they all get here? Maybe it’s the way they cover fields with reckless abandon. Maybe it’s the knowledge that they are only temporary. I’m not sure exactly what it is that makes wildflowers so lovely to me. I wish I could scatter seeds all over every patch of grass I come across so that my life could be painted with them. But then, they wouldn’t really be wild would they? It’s kind of like the difference between a lioness at the zoo and her sister on the plains. They are both lovely, but there’s a quality about the sister: Her wildness.

I wish I could say I was wild. I’m not. I’m fairly tame. I’m pretty domesticated. But I do have wild thoughts and dreams and every now and then I’ll surprise everyone with my reckless abandon. I’ll show up somewhere unexpected, even if only for a short time. So I do think that I’m a bit like a wildflower. If there were a flower that I could be, that is. I’ve never been as popular as the rose, or as elegant as the peony. I’ve never been tall enough to be a tulip or exotic enough to be an orchid. Sometimes when I show up, I’m yellow. Sometimes I’m pink. And sometimes, like the blooms in the pictures below, I’m purple. I don’t like being boxed in to one color all the time, or to one area. So, it’s no surprise that when I heard a rumor that there were purple wildflowers taking over a well-known field in town I knew I had to shoot there soon before they were gone.

And shoot there we did…

Today I’ll switch it up and start with my favorite:

Tuesdays with Nate | How to brew beer

Mar 30 at 2:22 pm

Saturday was a great day.  Instead of spending the day working on our new studio space, like we probably should have, I spent the day brewing beer with one of my good friends and past grooms, Ian.  Brewing beer is a lot harder than one would think.  Doing it right, making really GOOD BEER, requires a combination of art and science, precision and understanding of the entire process, selecting the right ingredients and using/building the right tools.  For example, if the water you put in the grain is lower than 150 degrees, you won’t get enough sugar out of it, if it’s higher than 170 degrees, it will release bitter tannins that can ruin your flavor.  We spent the day boiling, pouring, measuring, heating, cooling, and hopping a traditional brown ale.  I’ll let you know how it tastes in a few weeks.

We used 3 kinds of hops, added with about 45, 30, and 5 minutes before the beer was finished boiling

One of the hardest parts, it turns out, is cooling the beer from about 215 degrees to below 80 as fast as possible (around 1/2 hour) so that bacteria that could harm the yeast doesn't have time to grow. 50 feet of copper tubing with ice water flowing through them will do the trick.

I have a friend that makes his own beer. His house was flooded last year so when they remodeled it He actually made his own beer room add on. He is always telling me it’s an exact science… I’m just along for the free drinks :) Great post. let us know how it goes!

  • Scottie:

That’s awesome Nate. I just got my first brew setup and can’t wait to try it out. I’m gonna brew up an IPA. Would love to hear how it went.

  • Becka:

    I love this Nate.
