Welcome Home | Ch-ch-ch-changes…

Nate and I signed the lease yesterday morning so I can finally share some snapshots of the house. It’s ADORABLE. I adore it. It’s worthy of adoration. You get the idea. We move in just a few short weeks. I’m not very excited about the whole moving thing and all the logistics associated with it. I’m going to paint it lovely colors. And I’m going to plant tons of lovely plants. And Nate is going to get to play his drums as loudly as he wants. And we might get a puppy. And we’re going to have dinner parties. And we’re getting a grill. I told my dad about the house and he told me that we were so “Ma and Pa”. I’m okay with that. ;)

I also wanted to show you some photos of my little garden. I’m starting to think we didn’t build a big enough planter. I sprinkled some organic plant food all over it this week and it’s been raining every day and it seems that the tomatoes and eggplants are growing out of control. Each time we walk by them we stare in awe and ask each other, “Was this limb hanging way out here before?!” The answer is always no. These things are taking off like crazy! I’m so happy that I haven’t killed everything yet! Just look at these photos, the tomatoes and eggplants have easily doubled in size!

My basil is also doing exceptionally well. I was really worried because I’d bought two different basil transplants. One from the local garden store, the other from the farmer’s market. The one from the farmer’s market was almost dead when I transplanted it but it seems to have come back with a vengence. I keep reading gardeners talking about how they have a love/hate relationship with basil because it seems to take over their gardens. I can see how that happens. My rosemary hasn’t gotten as big as I expected. I may devote an entire planter to it in the new place because I ADORE rosemary. My lavender is doing well and I can’t wait to snip some branches off and make lavender sugar. My mint is pretty much extinct. Oh well. I’ll probably plant an entire planter of mints in the new place. The oregano is doing really well. It’s so pretty the way it creeps along the sides of the planter.

The jalepenos and eggplants are covered in blooms. I had never seen eggplant flowers before but they are so pretty. It’s a bit sunny in the photo so you can’t really see the pretty purple color of the petals. They are soft purple with bright yellow stamens sticking out. I hope all these flowers mean that soon veggies will be popping up. I hope to at least get one this season, even though I planted so late. The tomatoes are so tall and lush. They are starting to shade the entire planter so I’m going to have to go get those little tomato stand things to keep them from leaning over the rest of the plants too much. The tomatoes are seriously magical. They seem to be growing 6 inches every hour. Or at least it feels that way.

How are your plants doing? Any fruits/veggies on your vines?

@Kyla It’s just starting the rainy season here in Florida. We have a fall planting season coming up that I’m so excited for. Can’t wait to get onions and strawberries in the earth! By then we’ll be in our new place and I’ll have tons of space. You’ll have to post photos of your garden once you get it running! :)

Oh, they looks wonderful! We’ve been waiting to plant and waiting to plant… after a warm spring we’ve had a cold and rainy snap that hit with a vengeance! I’m hoping that if everything goes well we can get things in the ground this week, and then my garden will look a lot more like yours :)

    Thanks for the update!

Exciting! Maybe it will stop raining long enough to move everything safely! Also, be prepared with the tomatoes, egg plant etc to stake the stalks (chuckle) so that they don’t break in half. The poor branches can’t take the weight! Put a few buckets under gutters or the edge of your house to catch rain water too for the days it doesn’t rain. Rain water is the best!!!

How fun and exciting–you’re right, the moving part sucks, but the reward is adorable new digs! Yay for you guys! Garden looks great! Yesterday I came home to find my lush cilantro plant (which is not so easy to grow) completely chewed down to nothing but stalks! A groundhog came and took every leaf, the little jerk! Hopefully you will not have the same problem with your lovely herb garden.
