Still here dancing with the Groo Grux King…
…we’ll be drinking big whiskey while we dance and sing. Dave Matthews Band gave me the best possible dance situation when they ended the Saturday night show with “Two Step” as an encore. Hello boogie fever. Hello sweaty girl.
They also played my favorite musical build of all time when they played “Lie in Our Graves” during the Saturday show. And while I stand by my statement that Saturday’s show was much bigger and better than Friday’s, (They played for almost an hour longer!) I will say that on Friday he played “You and Me“, “Crash“, and ended with “Little Red Bird” all some of my favorites. If you’re curious, you can see the setlists from the weekend here.
I’m not exactly sure how to explain how I feel in places like these. The energy. A man, a band can play a progression of chords and 19,000 humans move in unison. A wave of energy swells and the people all begin to dance. Everyone’s heart beats fall into step and the crowd becomes a life form all it’s own. It’s magnificent. I wish I could bottle it. I wish I could bathe in it. I wish people in general could be as connected to each other in daily life as they are 7 minutes into a guitar solo. If you’ve ever been a skeptic about the affect of music on an individual, you should come observe the masses. It’s otherworldly. It’s like realizing you’re in a fantastic dream, and then getting to enjoy yourself in the fantastic dream.
When Warren Haynes came on stage to perform with the band I knew I had to record it for my dad who is a guitarist himself and loves great, live guitar solos. “Cortez the Killer” was the song Warren played on Saturday and it also happens to contain one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. Here you go Dad…
