Fall Colors and the Look of Love | Upper Peninsula, Michigan Encore

Nov 4 at 2:22 pm

Upper Peninsula, Michigan | Lake Superior

Kylee and Chris invited us out with them the day after their wedding for an Encore session during which we just drove up the interstate and stopped at amazing places. Kylee knew of a few choice spots but that didn’t stop us from wandering around until the sun went down.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much we adored the landscape in the Upper Peninsula. The colors, the climate, the foliage, the wreckage, the abandon that everyone has. No one minds at all if you climb through a broken down warehouse with rusty nails and glass all over the floor. There’s no barbed wire around a broken down and half sunken dredger. There’s lakes that look as big as oceans. There’s forests that look like fire. It’s pretty much a magical land…

Warbird Antique Airplane Museum | Mary & Paul’s Encore

Oct 6 at 2:22 pm

Kissimmee, Florida

As a surprise to her groom, Mary set up an encore session at the Warbird Museum and purchased a one hour flight for her airplane-loving husband. He was so excited when she gave him his certificate during their first look on their wedding day that we got excited just watching him get excited. When we got to the Warbird Museum, everyone welcomed us right away and gave us a bit of a history lesson on the plane that Paul would be flying. They also told us to go explore the other hangers full of other vintage flying contraptions. One of the pilots gave Paul the driver’s seat and took him up for an hour teaching him how to do flips and barrel rolls and all other kinds of stomach-churning stunts. After Paul’s flight they graciously allowed us to have a little portrait time with Mary and Paul, who decided to wear their wedding clothes again for this “Day After” style Encore session. We had never been given such complete freedom to shoot as we were from Mary, Paul and the Museum staff so we had a great time exploring the grounds. We hope it’s a day that Paul will always remember fondly and that these photos help them relive the memories for years to come. Now I kind of want to fly one!

For you readers that don’t live in Florida, these are Lovebugs. They are harmless, just annoying. They swarm Florida annually in the late summer. We figured since they kept trying to get in all our photos, we’d go ahead and just let them star in one…

How She Go? | Kylee & Chris’ Michigan Encore

Sep 27 at 2:48 pm

Iron River, Upper Peninsula, Michigan

How she go? It’s what the men in Kylee’s family ask when they walk by you. It’s what they say when they pick up the phone. They’re asking how we’re doing, how everything’s going. And it was going great! I decided to forgo the wedding sneak peek first because we already showed everyone at the reception a same day edit slideshow so they had their own private sneak peek. But these photos, these they haven’t seen.

This is part one of Kylee and Chris’ Day After session. Can I even begin to express how much we loved the UP? I’m not sure I can. It’s gorgeous, and sprawling, and temperate, and colorful. The people have more charm and southern hospitality than we’ve got here in the south. Everyone is family, or acts like it, and it’s incredibly welcoming. I can see why Kylee loves her hometown so much.

Kylee and Chris took us on a roadtrip from Iron River, where Kylee grew up, to the top of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (which is actually attached to Wisconsin, not Michigan… tricky) to explore some amazing industrial sites in the old, abandoned mining areas. The UP still has the fingerprints of the old iron mining industry all over it and there’s nothing stopping anyone from just parking on the side of the road and walking into these amazing sites of worn out structures. Nate and I joked that we were going to raise our portrait prices so we could afford to fly all our couples up there for a session. ;) My words fail me in describing how much of a wonderland it was. I’ll just show you…
