Tuesdays with… Sarah | Interview with a Newlywed
While Nate and I are on vacation, we thought it might be fun to hand over the reins of Tuesday’s post to one of our own lovely brides. (Nate was gracious enough to accept another week off from blog post writing. He’s so generous!) Since I had been putting the finishing touches on this October wedding, I couldn’t think of anyone better than Sarah to be our guest for today’s post. And luckily for us, she agreed!
Sarah and her hubby Roger tied the knot just about a month ago and did such a fantastic job pulling off one of the most beautiful weddings we’ve ever seen, I’d ask her to share her wisdom with us and let us in on the secrets to a successful wedding (and first month of marriage). We can’t wait for Sarah and Roger’s full wedding post to go live next week, her details were to die for and so effortlessly charming. Take it away Sarah…

HOW DID YOU MEET? Ok, this is kind of funny! Roger is the same age as one of my older sisters and they went to school together since elementary. My freshman year in high school I had seen Roger around campus, just little glimpses, and I thought he was just the cutest guy in school! So one afternoon while walking home from school with my neighbor, a big blue truck pulls up alongside us, and low and behold, it’s Roger! I was so excited! Roger started asking all these questions about Amanda (my sister…..greeeeat.) So when I get home I start complaining to my neighbor that all the guys like Amanda! She already has a boyfriend! I was really bummed out! I eventually find out that I was the one that Roger liked (YAY!) and that he was so nervous when he pulled up he just started asking about Amanda since that was the only thing we had in common….haha!
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU THE MOST TO ROGER? Ok, he’s going to kill me, but I’m not gonna lie, from the very beginning I always loved his booty! He’s got a perfect one! But also, I love his eyes! He has the most gorgeous green eyes, he thinks they are brown because he’s color blind. I could stare at them for hours!
WHEN AND HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS WAS IT? I don’t think I ever really had like a blinding epiphany or anything…..I just grew to love him and his family and couldn’t imagine not having any of them in my life, for the rest of my life.
HOW DID HE PROPOSE? It was on our 6 year anniversary! I’m afraid it was my fault he couldn’t do anything really romantic. He kept trying to plan something to go somewhere and I kept saying…..”Don’t worry about it! We don’t have to do anything big this year!” I figured that we could just stay home, cook dinner, and decorate the Christmas tree together! When got done eating (which we did picnic style in the living room) Roger started to look violently ill (uh oh, did my ravioli make him sick?!?!) No….it was the thought of popping the question, hahaha! Roger is a painfully shy person! SO, after asking him about 5 times (completely clueless) if he was going to be sick, he pulled the ring out and popped the question!
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR VISION FOR YOUR WEDDING? Both of our favorite time of year is the fall, so I definately knew that was when I wanted to do it, and that was the theme I wanted to do. I love Martha Stewart and always wanted a beautiful casual elegant Martha-esque wedding!
TELL US ABOUT FINDING YOUR VENUE: We chose Black Diamond Ranch. My cousin had her wedding reception there about 2 years ago and as soon as Roger & I saw it, we said hands down this is where we want to do it whenever we get married! You feel transported to an entirely different place when you get there, it’s definately not Florida looking. We both love fall, and the outdoors, and the country and this was just perfect! I definately recommend Black Diamond for any prospective brides. They definately went above & beyond!
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST PLANNING CHALLENGE? Seating arrangements! I never thought it would be so complicated or take so long! So to those future brides, just plan on taking an afternoon to chart all of that out! And I definately recommend assigned seating!
DID YOU HAVE ANY DIY DETAILS? I had a bunch of DIY, remember I’m a Martha fan! One of my favorites was our favors. We made these little magnets out of beer bottle caps with our picture inside of them! We basically had our family and friends save up their bottle caps (we had HUNDREDS of them, hahaha!) and we punched out our picture with a 1″ hole punch, laminated them, stuck them in the cap, and poured clear casting resin on top, then let them dry! Another one of my favorites were our send off seed packets! I bought small glassine bags, stuffed them with seeds, and then sewed on a little tag. To open people just tore off the tag and the bag opened! We had many other DIYs: our decorative glitter pumpkins, the twig placecards, the old window seating chart, our quilt questbook, and our invitations! My friend Brandie made the two wreaths we used as decor for the ceremony & reception.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? When I cut a piece of cake 3 times the size of the one Roger shoved in my face!!!! The ride back home in the limo and looking at eachother and saying, “Wow we’re married!” It’s hard to pick one, what I remember the most about the night is just having a great time with everyone who came! It’s definately true when people warn you that it all goes by in a blur!
WAS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT SOMEONE DID THAT HELPED YOU MORE THAN YOU EXPECTED? Oh yes! One of my best friend’s, Brandie, took me to dinner on Tuesday night and said, “Write down everything we have left to do.” So I did. She then took it and organized it all and said we’ll do this then, that there, and so on! Half of it wouldn’t have gotten done without her help that week!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AND ROGER AS A MARRIED COUPLE? We have a simple life with our dog and we’re just living it! I want to do some traveling, take some trips, enjoy just being together! We’re going to Colorado with friends in January and skiing/snowboarding for the first time! It will also be the first time I will be in snow! And, to answer the age old question that comes after you say “I Do”… yes we will eventually have kids, we’re just not ready for them quite yet!
ANY LAST BITS OF ADVICE? RELAX! If something that you reeeeally wanted just isn’t going to happen, or something gets forgotten at home the day of the wedding (and it will happen!) it is going to be ok, it won’t make or break your wedding! I had to learn this lesson! And it really didn’t ruin my day! (Oh and the first, the FIRST thing that is required after you get engaged is to hire Studio222 Photography!) And my favorite quote: “Look, I don’t want to wax philosophic, but I will say that if you’re alive you’ve got to flap your arms and legs, you’ve got to jump around a lot, for life is the very opposite of death, and therefore you must at the very least think noisily and colorfully, or you’re not alive.” -Mel Brooks
