Tuesdays With Nate | How Creative Businesses can Utilize the iPad

May 11 at 2:22 pm

I’m back! It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been able to write a full bodied TWN post but I’m excited to be back and I’ve got some cool stuff to talk about. Hope you don’t mind geeking out with me for the next few minutes. If you know us (or have ever read our blog before) you know that we (or at least I) are complete fanboys of Apple, not to mention how grateful I am that for so long the company has taken care of us. People ask us all the time about our iPad (most people ask us before asking if we bought one, just assuming we would, and we did… so I guess they assumed correctly). We’ve had it for about a month now, and it’s about time I shared with you my thoughts on it. However, there are thousands of reviews out there about this thing, so I’m just going to highlight how we, as photographers make the most of it.

It’s a beautiful mobile portfolio
We love to be able to show our work to people we meet, but it’s so impersonal to hand someone a card and hope they remember to come by your site later. The quality of the pictures on the iPad is amazing. And it’s a huge visual difference from viewing them on an iPhone. We set up a few albums of our favorites (wedding favs, details, photo booths, getting ready etc…) and two complete weddings to show potential new friendclients what we give back. We also use the photo frame feature to play through our favorites as a slideshow when we are in meetings.

Great mobile email
We both love the email on our iPhones, but when it comes to longer correspondence, having a larger keyboard is great. The email interface is beautiful and fast, and after a little getting used to, typing is a breeze.

Documents
Document creation is a simple (after that typing learning curve that I mentioned earlier). The notes app that comes with the iPad is nice and syncs up with your mail app, but two other apps are a MUST for iPad users. One is Pages, the app on which I’m typing this blog entry, which allows for word processing and transfers files back to your computer, or can be exported as a PDF or Microsoft Word doc (if you’re into that sort of thing). Another crucial app is called Goodreader, which allows you to save documents locally and browse and organize them on your device. It also allows you to save from mail or transfer via USB.

Entertainment
Ok, not a professional use maybe, but busy photographers also need to be able to lay back and enjoy their “free time”. ;) The best example of this for me is the Netflix app, and a close second is Stumbleupon. Both apps are free, and provide hours of entertainment, or are handy if you throw your back out and just need to lay down and watch Arrested Development for a couple hours. It’s also much easier to watch movies and TV shoes on the iPad than the iPhone. Bigger screen, and you can set it to sit up on it’s own. We have yet to take it on a plane but we’re really excited about using it while we travel! The battery life is much better than the iPhone so you can actually watch movie after movie without worrying about needing to recharge.

Potential ideas
There are lots of people talking about what the iPad might do for them, I’ve heard everything from album design and proofing to new apps for studio management. Perhaps some are more practical than others. One idea I’ve been toying with is using the iPad to control your Mac via a program like Mobile Mouse, and creating hotkey shortcuts to quickly edit and sort pictures in a program like Aperture. (See video below.) Another thing we’re looking forward to is using the camera connection kit to quickly import some of our favorite pictures for a same-day preview for our couples at wedding receptions. Not only will the camera connection kit allow you to individually select the images you want to import, but it also imports RAW and video files directly to the iPad. If you want to get really fancy you can even run them through an editor like Photogene or Photoshop Mobile.  Some other things we’re excited about include digital versions of our client’s wedding albums pre-sized for the iPad so our clients can have a complete mobile version of their album to show to friends and family. (Clients, this service is now included with our largest album and available with any album. Ask us about it if you’re interested.) If you’ve got any other ideas, suggestions, or recommendations please let me know!

Final thoughts
It is not a replacement for your main computer, but it is much more than “glorified” iPod touch.  It won’t replace your Macbook Pro. It is easy to use, and amazingly powerful, but the thing that really makes me excited is its potential. The first iPhone blew me away, even before the app store, before the ability to send mms, and before the screen would rotate in every app. This is the first implementation of an amazing device. There will be lots of new apps, new changes, and we will find new uses. For now, don’t sell your computer and try to run your business with an iPad, but if you can get your hands on one, try it and enjoy it!

Tuesdays with Nate | Perks of the Job

Apr 27 at 2:22 pm

Do you ever ask someone that you think has an awesome job how great their life must be? I mean, like asking a pilot if he loves traveling, or a the guy behind the counter at your favorite BBQ restaurant if he just loves getting to eat all the free BBQ he wants? When you’re on the other side, it’s never quite as prestigious as it sounds (unless it’s 4Rivers BBQ, then it has to be awesome). I bring this up because a few weeks ago we had a realization that we had not been documenting our personal lives the way a pair of in-love photographers should be. We’ve spent a lot of time lately enjoying some new friends and trying out some new things, and we are now bringing cameras everywhere we go.

Here are a few from our personal catalog of images from the last month. It’s fun just shooting for ourselves, but we actually have to discipline ourselves to do it.

Being a photographer has it’s perks (as in having great documentation of our lives), what’s the best perk of your job?

  • Christopher Belcher:

    love the aquarium shot

  • Becka:

    Erin,
Nate had his on a strap across his body that time and it made me nervous. Usually we bring a backpack. :)

  • ESBlondie:

I’m in love with the first picture! So cool! When you go for bike rides, what do you do with your camera? Do you leave it around your neck? My husband and I ride a lot and I’ve love to take my nice camera.

  • Saudade:

I love the GA aquarium, that photo of the two of you is so cute!

I guess the best perk I get at my job apart from being able to draw pictures everyday is the opportunity to see winner’s faces when we occasionally get to print and bring down those giant lottery checks to them. That mix of disbelief/joy never gets old. It is sort of contagious in a way, whenever I meet a winner I just feel happy for the rest of the work day :)

Tuesdays with Nate | Vintage Cameras, Family, and Film

Apr 13 at 2:22 pm

Most of you regulars know that I’ve taken to collecting vintage cameras. A big part of that is, actually let’s just attribute all of it to, my dad. We were visiting my family in St. Augustine a while back, and like normal my family busted out all sorts of embarrassing pictures of me. One of those pictures happened to have great lighting and a nice background blur, so naturally I asked, “What was this taken with?” To which my dad, after rummaging around in his closet for a minute, said, “This” and handed me a shoebox with an Olympus OM-1 inside. A few months later, when my dad asked what I wanted for Christmas, I told him I wanted a medium format camera. So for Christmas I got a Yashica D twin lens, and a month later for my birthday he got me an Argus C-44 Rangefinder and an Exacta G 35mm (1950s from Dresden Germany). On our last trip home for my nephews birthday, there was another box of goodies waiting for me: several Brownie box cameras and a fairly new Polaroid SX-70. That on top of Becka’s newest aquisition, her vintage Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera, and we’ve got quite a collection going now.

I shot some frames while Ian and I were brewing beer and last week we took the Yashica and Olympus out to DeLeon Springs in DeLand and Becka did an amazing job on her first try using a manual film camera.

These images have not been retouched at all. We just scanned them into the computer from the prints we got from the lab and sized them for the blog. Becka is kind of in love with the natural tones of the color film and refuses to mess with them. It has a quality you just can’t replicate in photoshop. But as great as all the cameras are, the real joy for me has been spending time with my family, finding something new to bond over, and sharing in the excitement with each other. Using the cameras isn’t too bad either. I know Becka has been feeling a bit guilty that we don’t take many personal photos of our life, and she’s enjoying shooting more day to day with these new (old) toys. Hopefully we’ll build up a nice collection of images for our future children and grandchildren to look through and mock us about. I wish it hadn’t taken so long for me to realize how valuable my family can be, and how valuable they are to me, but I’ve definitely started taking advantage of every opportunity to spend time with them. Was there something that happened with you that made you really start to appreciate your family?

Also, we have a bit of a problem now. We’ve got two boxes worth of cameras and camera bits and no where to put them. Becka is imagining a guest room makeover with one of those super long floating shelves from ikea to show off all these bad boys. Do you have any good display ideas? They’re just too sexy to keep boxed up.

PS. We’re currently updating our portfolio website so if you’ve noticed anything quirky happening on the blog, website, or anything like that, don’t worry. We’re just getting stuff moved around and will be launching the made-over site soon.

  • Kathleen Frank:

I am in LOVE with these images! The color is gorgeous, so soft and delicate. I have been collecting film cameras for years. Most of them don’t work, but I love having them all over the house and using them as props. I do have some displayed on some floating shelves! Mix them with some old empty frames and some family photos and it will look amazing :) Now I have to go look for a Yashica on Ebay!

  • Becka:

@Andrea Yup! The impossible project sells film for them: http://shop.the-impossible-project.com/shop/film/sx70

  • Andrea [bella eats]:

Becka – I totally agree! I’ve been coveting an SX 70 for awhile now, but have been worried about being able to acquire film. Have you solved this dilemma?

  • Becka:

@Andrea There really is an unmistakeable quality to film… the risk of ruining it, the waiting to see what turns out, the physical property of the image once it’s on paper. It’s a bit magical.

  • Andrea [bella eats]:

I love this post, and learning more about you and your family! My love for photography comes from my dad, and I love that it is a bond that we share still today.

I had a vintage Mamiya M645 medium format camera and a plethora of lenses that I sold a couple of years ago. Man oh man, do I regret it now! My photography obsession started in high school, with film, and I really miss spending all day in a dark room developing prints. Digital is fantastic and convenient and has endless possibilities, but there is something so tactile and mysterious about film…

  • Becka:

@Chad Yeah, we did that last time, but it’s kind of expensive and it helps us save a bit to just scan them in ourselves. The results are similar to what we get back on disc from the lab.

  • Chad Pilster:

You know you can have the lab take your images straight to digital. Although maybe you are looking for the effect of scanned prints =)

  • Cheryl:

Beautiful post Mr. Nate…. I am sooooo happy thinking about life and family and you being a part of it!!!! I, we are truely blessed!!!!!!
